FAQs

Aren’t editing and proofreading the same thing?

Not at all, proofreading is done after your copy has been edited. The focus here is to look for typos, and basic punctuation and grammatical errors.

Content editing, on the other hand, is divided into two main categories:

  • Developmental editing which is all about the big picture. It looks at organization, completeness, pacing, and order. It looks at the voice, tone, and language.
  • Line-Editing is where a sentence-by-sentence analysis of your work takes place. It looks at grammar, clarity, and flow.

In a nutshell, when I edit your work I look for shifts in tone, tense, person, and number; check for subject/verb agreement, sentence structure, inconsistencies, and obscure passages; I rework sentences for overall clarity; and correct grammar, syntax, and word usage.

i understand THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF EDITING. What kind of editing do you do?

I offer several types of editing in addition to proofreading. Here’s what’s on the menu...

BASIC PROOFREADING

- Your copy has been professionally copyedited. Now you need a quality control check before submitting your work for publication.

- Proofreading is the final tidy-up that looks out for any problems that have slipped through previous rounds of editing. It’s the last line of defense before your work gets published.

  • identify and correct typographical error
  • correct punctuation errors
  • correct misspellings

EDITORIAL PROOFREADING

  • correct copy for spelling and punctuation
  • correct simple errors in grammar and word usage
  • check for shifts in tone, tense, person, and number
  • check for subject/verb agreement
  • check sentence structure and reading ease
  • query the author about inconsistencies or obscure passages

COPYEDITING

(in addition to the editorial proofreading)

- Your work is written and you’re happy with it. Now it’s time to focus on readability.

- Copyediting will correct and smooth out all the wrinkles in your writing while keeping your voice front-and-center.

  • correct spelling and punctuation
  • correct grammar, syntax, and word usage
  • check for shifts in tone, tense, person, and number
  • rework sentences, if necessary, for overall clarity
  • query the author about apparent errors or inconsistencies
  • check that certain words are not overused within a paragraph or section of a document

SUBSTANTIVE EDITING

(in addition to copyediting)

  • identify and solve problems of overall clarity or accuracy
  • reorganize paragraphs, sections, or chapters to improve the order in which the text is presented
  • analyze sentences for structure and syntax
  • write or rewrite segments of text to improve readability and flow
  • query the author about issues of concern
  • suggest revisions for clarity

LANGUAGE EDITING

This type of editing is for those whose first language is not English.

I rewrite your copy to make it sound like it was written by a native English speaker while keeping your voice front-and-center.

I don’t have the budget for a retainer right now, can you edit my copy from time to time as one-off projects?

I certainly can! This is a wonderful way for us to get to know each other and find out if we’re a good fit for lengthier projects. Drop me line!

What’s your typical turnaround time?

My typical turnaround time for digital copy and marketing collaterals is 72 hours (not including weekends and holidays) depending on the length of the project. Manuscripts, of course, take much longer. Rush jobs can be accommodated for an additional added fee.

Are retainer hours transferable from month to month?

Unfortunately not. You cannot forward your unused hours from one month to the next.

Do you hold office hours?

Not per se. I work Monday to Thursday 10am-5pm. Skype meetings are scheduled ahead of time and I usually respond to emails within 48-72 hours.

When we decide to work together, what do I need to send you?

I’ll need your copy in a specific format:

  • Typeface: Arial
  • Point Size: 12-pt
  • Document Type: Word Doc (MS)

What’s your invoicing method?

I accept PayPal (which can be paid via major credit cards).

Retainers have the option of being paid-in-full or on a monthly basis. Payment installment and due dates will be outlined in the Agreement.

One-off projects begin after a one-hour fee has been paid which will be allocated to the full project fee.

Sample edits must be paid in full before the work begins.
